So the ingredients of this installation will be photographs of and by the people of the Third Ward. In a way unique to photography, evidence of lives lived will be preserved in over 3,000 quart canning jars, each containing one photograph. Collectively all 3,000 jars will span the entire row house space, creating a near-maze of the faces and places of the Third Ward.
Early in the process I gave a camera to Pamela Seymore, a young woman who lives less than a block from Project Row Houses. When her photos returned from the lab, one was an image of Pam holding a portrait of her mother. Pam particularly wanted her mother's image included in the installation because Pam had been raised in the very house I was working in. Her father died in that house.
Pam and her sister Kay also wrote a note about their mother; it follows the photograph in this collection. Pam's daughter Jasmine took the photo. Jasmine now attends after-school classes at the row houses. Jasmine's photo also appears in this collection.
