Frognet
Archive Information

Here's something the list should know, and this should be added to the FAQ:

----- Q: Why aren't there complete archives of frognet? Where do I go to search what we have?

A: You can view ~64 MB worth of the most recent messages and search them at . Right now, this covers roughly three years worth of posts, although there is a gap (Jan. 2001 - May 2002), as the Yahoo! Groups system was not archiving frognet during that time. There is no way to add back old posts to the Yahoo! Groups system -- they do not offer more space. As more posts are added older ones will become unsearchable.

You can download/view archives in month-at-a-time segments, starting in July 2002 to the present, here: http://lists.frognet.org/pipermail/frognet-frognet.org/ All future posts will be archived there, but there is no searchable interface at the moment (although there might be in the future). This archiving is done automatically by software attached to our mailing list software (Mailman).

Complete older archives (c. 1996 - 2002) are no longer available, as there was a physical failure of the disk/system they were on before the move to frognet.org (spring of 2002). I (Callie) have made a best effort to obtain backups from the former administrator, and have also asked the list and individuals to search their hard drives for personal archives, but have only been able to recreate partial archives of 1996 - 2002.

If you are interested in helping us install appropriate searching/display software for mailing list archives (like mhonarc/namazu) please contact James Randolph -- he has been working on that project.

Hopefully this clears up any questions the list/FAQ-reading public might have about the archives. We have chunks of messages from 1996-2000, but haven't posted them for the general public as they're a lot less useful without a searchable interface. I have plans to just put the raw text files up for download, but need to spend a few more hours stripping out virus-laden posts, first.
