Kimmy Henkel
a delicate assignment
answered by
nurturing a Shrew
9
Kimmy found the shrew dead. Some bicycler had run over it on the bike path.
It was a beautiful little animal that we knew little about. So we called it a mole.
8
To help preserve the mole that became a dead shrew I helped Kimmy by
pumping it full of alcohol.
10
The shrew has been observed performing what might be called a shrew conga line.
A family of mother and young will fall into line one behind the other, the first young
grasping the fur around the mother’s tail, the next grabbing the rear of the first baby
and on down the line. The line then snakes its way through the undergrowth. By
mimicking the movement of a snake, this may be a protective behavior that gives the
family of tiny shrews some safety from predators.

Awakening at night in my tent alone in the Jemez Wilderness Area to the sounds
of elk bugling for a moment I thought it was a dinosaur.

The rattlesnake by my back porch. The fear and rock that clobbered it.
The friend who showed me how to skin it. I saved the skin, buried the head
and ate the meat fried and beer battered.

so
A conga line of venomous rodents slither through the undergrowth like a mystical
rattlesnake who can not be clobbered skinned and eaten or fried in a beer batter but
delivers the forbidden fruit... Earth’s art work is tactile, physical and verges on the violent.
Fingers forced into the clay body like a surgical glove in the intestines of a gut-shot
solider. The archeology of life, new and old, mix in the birth process. The placenta oozes
from the womb enveloping this artist's fingers.
