Dendrobates histronicus
Observations of an Unnatural Act

Over the course of a couple years I observed two captive male Dendrobates histrionicus reverse their dominance roles several times. I watched as the male frogs grappled, twisted, flipped, and performed maneuvers an Olympic wrestler would be proud to perform. In time a winner would be declared by unseen and unknown rules. The dominant frog would assume prime real estate and call throughout the day to entice the females to mate. Meanwhile, the submissive male would skulk in his limited range. He would avoid interactions with either the female frogs or the dominant male. His movements were usually limited to non-threatening territories but a thoughtful home design still allowed for food and shelter.
